The week in Belgium, based in the Peace Village in the tiny settlement of Mesen, was an awesome experience.
It was New Zealand regiments which happened to be opposite Mesen in June 1917. In achieving their military objective these Kiwis liberated Mesen (the piles of rubble that were left) from the Germans. Only to be lost again a couple of months later.
The week was dominated by Belgian euphoria about the long way we had come and the honour it was to host us, the Cross of Sacrifice and remembrance in all its forms.
